Visit of David Lammy

David Lammy, Minister for Culture, visited Tyne and Wear Archives Services on 19 September 2006 as part of his tour of several cultural venues in the Tyneside area.  He was particularly keen to hear about the Service's Legacy project, a community-based project dedicated to the history and heritage of black and minority ethnic communities.

Andrea Macdonald, Legacy project officer, shows David Lammy a scrapbook describing the trial of Mallet and Craggs, two sailors whose actions led to the death of black sailor Africanus Maxwell in North Shields in 1831.

David Lammy was particularly interested in a photograph of a slum dwelling in South Shields showing two unidentified black immigrants.
